Oreas Comma (Polygonia oreas) is a small-medium butterfly, with a wingspan of 1.625 to 1.875 inches. It is very rarely seen in East Bay. In the surrounding area, it has been seen March to September, with small peaks in the numbers in April and July. Hosts plants are Gooseberries (Ribes).
Adults feed primarily on tree sap and rotting fruit, and only rarely visit flowers to nectar.
Oreas Comma is very similar to Satyr Comma (Polygonia satyrus) (which can also be seen in the Garden). They can be distinguished by the shape of the “comma” on the underside of the hindwing. For the Oreas Comma it looks like a check-mark, whereas for the Satyr Comma, it is like a fish hook.
This butterfly is found only in North America.
