Funereal Duskywing (Erynnis funeralis) is a is a small-medium butterfly, with a wingspan of 1.25 to 1.75 inches. It is a very rare stray to our extended local area. Before 2026, there are only 2 observations on iNaturalist from East Bay. In 2026, it is being widely seen all across East Bay, with more than two dozen observations by the end of July. Host plants are various legumes, including Deerweed and Vetch. The caterpillars live in shelters of rolled leaves.
In the U.S., it is normally found across the southern states: Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Strays are regularly recorded up to northern Illinois, northeast Nebraska, central Colorado, southern Nevada, and central California. It is not clear whether its appearance in northern California this year is a one-time event, or the first sign of a permanent range extension. It is also seen across Central America, and in the middle third of South America.
